The Photographers Ephemeris (TPE) helps plan outdoor photography shoots in natural light, particularly landscape and urban scenes. Its a map-centric Sun, Moon and Milky Way calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, day or night, for any location on earth.

Whether you need at-a-glance information on todays sun, moon and Milky Way data for your current location, or need to plan a precise alignment of the full moon for a future shoot, TPE has the tools you need. The combination of augmented reality, line-of-sight analysis and visual search supports the most sophisticated photo planning needs.

Night mode features a 3D representation of the Milky Way, pole stars and major constellations directly over the map, so you can easily visualise exactly how to align your shot.

Research and save your own list of favourite photographic locations, using seven different map types (including two offline maps) and save them in your locations list. Favourite locations are always displayed right there on the map.

Advanced features including visual sun and moon search, automatic time zone and elevation detection, correction for atmospheric refraction and height above the horizon, ensuring that you have the best possible information for planning your shoot.

You can even determine when the sun or moon will rise from behind nearby hills and mountains.

Key features:

- Time/direction of sun, moon, and galactic centre rise/set
- View azimuth and altitude of sun/moon and the galactic centre for any time of day/night

Note:

- Maps and elevation-based calculations require a data connection, except for offline map tiles previously downloaded and stored on your device
- Availability of map types is subject to change, due to 3rd party map service availability, terms or conditions
- Augmented reality requires an iPhone 6s (or later), iPad Pro or 2017 model and iOS 11 or later

Pros and cons of The Photographer's Ephemeris app for iPhone and iPad

The Photographer's Ephemeris app good for

This app is really well made, and its a pleasure to plan trips with it!
...but its a near perfect app :) ( would be neat to have virtual reality to see where sun and moon rise/set )
For those who love sunrises and sunsets !!! Very precise !!! I could plan a whole agenda during a journey with with awesome app !!!
Very useful. The best app of its kind! Suggestion: syncing with ipad via icloud and full screen mode for iphone
A must for every landscape photographer. Allows you to estimate sunset/sunrise positions and time for any location. Shows moon rising times. I use it for any photographic related trip.
if you are a nature photographer you have to get this app. Awesome possibilities.

Some bad moments

So it turns out that bundle purchase is disabled for loyal customers who had bought the app already. I hope you realize that its too much.
I completely loved this app till the previous version. The new version is almost identical do the web version, and it is horrible! Visual polution, non intuitive, worst graphics, horrible positions of the buttons and commands. PLEASE bring back the previous version!
Help has no search!!! How do I learn how to store a location??? It is frustrating to lose time trying to figure how to do a simple task like this!!! I still dont know how to do it…
This is really a great app for photo freaks. But unfortunately it is not compatible to older iOS versions. That nerves and is not fair to users of older hardware. So, sorry, but 2 stars are enough. Its often easy to stay compatible...if you really want... and if you are really interested on your customers!!!
Rendered the app useless since the last update. This update did not fix the short comings of the update. Sent in screen shots of the map for my area of before and after the update to the developers very disappointed.
I so hate this app now. Help is just gobble-dee-goop. Shadows are a joke. *Extremely* DIFFICULT to use or understand, especially compared to the earlier version. All you can do here is check sunrise and sunset and same for moon. Too difficult to use this for anything else. And a complete RIP OFF for the $10 you have to pay for this piece of crap. Not great before but it was workable. Now it is crap. I will have the find another app. Why do they always make things worse? If it was working, leave it alone.
